ALMENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (March 30, 2014)- A man is in the Van Buren County Jail after leading deputies on a chase that spanned two counties.
According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department, 25-year-old Jason Smith of Kalamazoo was travelling eastbound in his 1997 Chevy S-10, in the 24000 block of 28th avenue when he failed to stop for deputies. Deputies followed Smith in to Kalamazoo County on 28th Avenue which turns into H Avenue. Smith was travelling in access of 90 mph and ignoring stop signs on H Ave. The suspect then turned south onto 5th Street where deputies lost sight of him.
Then Kalamazoo County Deputies immediately found Smith travelling westbound on KL Ave. heading towards 22nd St. Deputies were then able to stop Smith at the intersection of 22nd St. and M-43. The suspect gave up and was taken into custody.
Smith is being charged with Fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and he has a felony warrant for possession of meth and possession of marijuana.
Smith is currently being held at the Van Buren County Jail awaiting arrangement in a Van Buren County court.
