Father Ejected From His Vehicle After Crash Outside Of Zeeland; Children Hospitalized

ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (March 30, 2014)- One man is in critical condition and three children are in stable condition after a crash Saturday night outside of Zeeland.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the on-ramp to I-196 westbound from the I-196 Business Loop. Deputies tell FOX 17 that 31-year-old Stephen Mattias was driving his GMC Envoy when he lost control on the on ramp and crashed and rolled his vehicle.

Mr. Mattias was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to a Grand Rapids Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Mr. Mattias did have three children in the SUV when it crashed. All three children, a nine-year-old, a eight-year-old and a nine-months old were all taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and are listed in stable condition.

It is unknown at this time whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating this crash.
