WHITING, Ind (March 28,2014) — BP has more than doubled its estimate of how much crude oil leaked into Lake Michigan from the company’s refinery in Whiting, Indiana.
After analyzing how much oil was collected by absorbent booms on the lake and from the beach, BP now says 39 barrels worth leaked due to an equipment failure.
That’s just over 16 hundred gallons.
The original estimate was 18 barrels.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk have asked for a meeting with BP officials to express their concern and eliminate future spills.
The EPA says the spill likely poses no long-term risks to the lake, wildlife or human health.
