Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (March 25, 2014)- It’s a nickname that has been used around Michigan for years.

Yooper, which is used to describe someone from the Upper Peninsula. Now, it will be added to the Merriam Webster Dictionary.

The entire thing came about after the Delta County Prosecutor was playing a game of Scrabble and noticed Yooper wasn’t in the dictionary. In 2002, he started the campaign to get it added. For the last 12 years, he’s been sending funny stories and local treats to officials at the dictionary to show them it deserved to be added.

Officials had to make sure it wasn’t just a regional term before giving it approval. You will find Yooper in the dictionary starting in a couple of weeks.
