Grand Rapids Hosts First Open Pool Tournament

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (March 23, 2014) — It’s a different kind of ‘March Madness’ for the more than 300 pool players from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio making their way to West Michigan.

Grand Rapids began hosting its first pool tournament of this size on Thursday, where 24 pool tables lined conference rooms at the Crown Plaza on 28th Street.

More than 50 teams of five players and singles weeded each other out.

Event organizers say they’re hopeful the tournament will be held bi-annually starting in the fall.  They say they’re working to bring money to local businesses through tournament sponsors.

“Our local pool hall can`t house this many players. It’s a limited space, they don`t have the size rooms or the hotel rooms to bring people from out-of-town,” tournament organizer Rich Williams said.

The event ran through Sunday, where top teams earned cash prizes.
