WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 13, 2014) — President Obama on Thursday signed a bill designating more than 30,000 acres of land in the Sleeping Bear Dunes as protected wilderness.
The bill protects 32,557 acres of the lakeshore in northern Michigan, which MLive says is nearly half of the dunes.
The measure passed the House in March and the Senate last June. It is the first area Congress has approved as protected wilderness since 2009.
