GRANDVILLE, Mich. (March 7, 2014) — Ryan Fischer was a glowing testament to the term “student-athlete.”

Now his loss has shaken a community just hours before the biggest game of the year.

Fischer, 17, was found dead in his home Friday morning. The Kent County Medical Examiner says Fischer died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – an enlarged heart.

A National Honor Society student at Grandville High School and the captain of both the football and hockey teams, the senior was one of eight student-athletes chosen by the MHSAA as a finalist for this year’s Class A Scholar-Athlete Award. He had also been accepted to both the United States Naval Academy and West Point Military Academy.

Grandville has a semifinal game against Detroit Catholic Central in the Division 1 State Hockey Tournament at 7:30 Friday night in Plymouth – a game that the Fischer family has asked to be played as scheduled, according to the MHSAA.
