Man Arrested On Animal Cruelty Charges After A Horse Was Found Dead In Branch County

OVID TOWNSHIP, Mich. (March 1st, 2014)- A man is in the Branch County Jail right now after animal cruelty charges were brought against the suspect after deputies found a deceased horse on a property outside of Coldwater.

According to the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, deputies received multiple phone calls saying that horses are receiving no food or water at a property in the 400 block of Warren Road in Ovid Township. One of the callers even stated that he had been dropping off hay and water to the horses since the beginning of February.

On February 25th, deputies went to the property on Warren Road to meet with the man that was leaving hay and water for the horses, when deputies arrived they discovered that one of the horses had died.

After an investigation, a warrant was issued for an arrest on animal cruelty charges, the owner of the property, 33-year-old Geoffrey Eickmann was arrested at his place of employment in Indiana.  Eickmann was arrested by Angola PD and waived extradition and was transported to the Branch County Jail where he was lodged for the warrant.

The 9 remaining horses were removed from the property and the incident remains under investigation.
