DETROIT, Mich. (Feb. 21, 2014) – The Detroit Red Wings announced that team captain Henrik Zetterberg underwent successful back surgery today. He will be re-evaluted after eight weeks.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Frank Cammisa at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Zetterberg has had chronic back issues for most of his NHL career. The back caused him to miss 13 games already this season. Zetterberg aggravated the back injury after playing just one game in the Olympic men’s hockey tournament as captain of team Sweden.

He currently leads the Red Wings with 48 points (16 goals, 32 assists) and a plus-19 rating in 45 games played so far this season. The Red Wings return to action from the Olympic break on February 26. The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are scheduled to begin in eight weeks.
