ALBION, Mich (February 10, 2014) – An Albion man is behind bars in Calhoun County after getting into a physical confrontation with police & fire officials that were responding to a house fire early this morning.
The fire happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 100 block of W. Ash Street. Flames were pouring out of the home when crews first arrived on scene.
During the initial response, the Incident Commander confronted a man who was too close to the fire, asking him to step back. Authorities say the man refused, then shoved the Incident Commander when they attempted to escort him away from the scene.
That led to a physical confrontation between a Calhoun County Deputy, an Albion Officer in full fire gear and the man refusing to step back.
Officers used mace during the confrontation and took the male into custody.
It was later discovered that officers had been called to the home earlier in the evening for a domestic dispute, and the male that had been arrested may have set the home on fire on purpose.
The investigation into this alleged arson continues. The name of the suspect that was arrested hasn’t been released.
All occupants of the home were accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
