FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich (February 10, 2014) – First responders in Fruitport Township were forced to use specialty equipment to rescue a Norton Shores man following a rollover crash on Sunday morning.

The crash happened around 10:15 a.m. along Westbound I-96 at Airline Road.

The 66-year-old man, who uses a wheelchair, lost control of the van he was driving and went over a guard rail, rolling 75-feet into an embankment.

The driver was able to call 9-1-1 and assist responders in locating him, but crews first on scene weren’t able to reach him because of several feet of snow surrounding the vehicle.

The Fruitport Township Fire Department brought in an Argo all-terrain vehicle, which is equipped with tracks that helped rescue crews reach the 66-year-old.

The patient was transported to a nearby ambulance by the Argo and taken to Hackley Hospital for treatment.  He’s since been treated and released.

Authorities in Fruitport Township say there have been several crashing on Monday as well, predominantly on highways, as road conditions and visibility continue to provide challenges for drivers.
