DETROIT — When Team Sweden needs a player from the NHL, there’s a very good chance it can find one on the Detroit Red Wings roster.
Former Grand Rapids Griffins forward Gustav Nyquist has been selected to replace his Detroit Red Wings teammate Johan Franzen on the Swedish Olympic hockey team. Franzen was forced to withdraw from the 2014 Sochi Games due to his ongoing concussion issues.
Nyquist has scored 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists) in 30 games with the Red Wings this season. He just recorded his first career hat trick and four-point game yesterday against the Washington Capitals.
Nyquist is tied with Tomas Tatar for third on the team in goals scored. He is seventh on the team in points, one behind Franzen.
