BIG RAPIDS, Mich – Authorities in Big Rapids say they’ve surrounded a home in the Finch Court area near Ferris State University, where they believe an individual tied to an early morning shooting near campus may be hiding.

As of 11:00 p.m., a special response team with the Michigan State Police has joined local and county authorities to attempt to make contact with a suspect male believed to be in the home.

The standoff situation has also led to the evacuation of nearby homes, affecting at least a dozen people.  Students and others that live in nearby residence halls are being asked to stay indoors as authorities work to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution.

Authorities also say at least one woman has been taken into custody for questioning during the course of this investigation.

Authorities at Ferris State have been searching for a male suspect after a Ferris State student was shot at an apartment in Venlo Place around 4:15 a.m. Saturday.  That shooting victim has since been treated at the hospital and released.

Similar searches at nearby apartments in the Finch Court area earlier this afternoon came up empty according to investigators.
