IONIA, Mich. — A 38-year-old man from Carson City was arrested on suspicion of operating under the influence of drugs as well as driving on a suspended license. He is accused of causing a chain-reaction crash in Ionia County.
According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, the at-fault driver drove left of center at a high speed and caused the crash in front of the Admiral gas station on M-66 at E. Tuttle Road. He was driving southbound in the northbound lane of M-66. The driver entered the intersection on a red light and hit Michaela Lewis from Saranac, 17, who was turning left from Tuttle to M-66. Lewis was taken to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Lewis’ car spun around and went airborne before hitting a second vehicle, which was stopped on M-66 at the red light.
The at-fault driver then hit a street sign before going into a ditch.
All of the drivers were wearing seat belts, and the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
