GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It’s not getting any warmer across West Michigan and an expert at a local sporting good store is showing us what apparel to look for to keep warm.
Jill Jacobson works at Bill and Paul’s Sportshaus in Grand Rapids. She said you want to keep warm by wearing multiple layers.
The base layer, she said, should be wool or a synthetic type of material. She also said it’s best to avoid cotton.
After the base layer, comes the mid-layer. This would involve a fleece or light jacket, that’s either down or down alternative.
When searching for the outer layer, she said there’s two things to look out for when buying a coat and snow pants.
“This time of year you want it windproof and waterproof…not wind- resistant or water-resistant,” Jacobson said.
When it comes to socks she said the same rules apply: no cotton, use wool. Also, she said it’s not a good idea to double up, saying, your toes will cram and you’ll get cold.
