WEST MICHIGAN — Chilly arctic air has made its way into West Michigan Monday behind a strong cold front. Light lake effect snow showers will wind down through the morning hours however more significant chances of snow return to West Michigan.
A low pressure center in the central states will move northeast into the Great Lakes by New Years Eve. Weather forecast models have continued to move the forecast track farther to the north, which will mean better chances for more widespread accumulating snow in West Michigan. Snow will move into the I-94 corridor late Tuesday and increase through the overnight hours into the start of the New Year. This system will likely be fairly slow moving, which will allow for an extended period of snow fall. Heaviest amounts will likely be along and south of I-94 where 5 to 9 inches of additional snow could be possible through Wednesday evening.
Arctic air sticks around through the end of the week before another brief warm-up this weekend. Long-range forecast models show arctic air moving back into the Great Lakes by next week and sticking around making the first two week of January 2014 very cold and snowy.
