Heavy Snow Moves Out As The Clean Up Begins

Posted

WEST MICHIGAN — After an active 24-hours filled with freezing rain, ice and snow conditions should calm this afternoon. With the heaviest snow moving out of West Michigan, the National Weather Service has allowed the Winter Weather Advisories to expire.

Between a quarter of an inch and a half of an inch of ice accumulated across many parts of West Michigan creating hazardous conditions on the road ways. Ice coated trees and power lines during the overnight hours and gusty winds in the early morning helped to down power lines and limbs. Some of the hardest hit areas in West Michigan were Calhoun, Barry, and Ionia counties.

As of noon, the surface low was situated right over Kalamazoo and moving east-north-east. Winds behind the low will switch northerly before eventually becoming northwesterly. This wind shift will usher in cooler temperatures and also create some lake-enhancement later Sunday night. For the most part however Sunday afternoon and evening should remain fairly calm and allow for crews to start cleaning up and restoring power to those without.
