GRAND RAPIDS, Mich– Massive icicles hanging alongside rooftops are a common sight around west Michigan. These large icicles, also called ice dams cause deaths every year in the United States.
The National Weather Service said that it has simple tips for homeowners to reduce the amount of icicles hanging from their roofs. The NWS said adding extra insulation to attics can stop heat from escaping the home, thus melting snow on the roof. Also, raking the snow off of your roof can reduce the amount of snow on top of your home, therefore less snow to melt. Additionally, make sure to clear all leaves, sticks and debris from storm drains to provide minimal blockage as water drains to the ground.
Many residents that FOX 17 spoke to said they use a shovel to knock down icicles to prevent anyone from being harmed.
