KENT COUNTY.,–There’s just no putting it off anymore, the deadline to get those packages in the mail is quickly approaching.
In fact, Monday is the busiest shipping day of the year. UPS plans to pick up around 34 million packages and deliver more than 29 million Tuesday.
They even brought in 55 thousand seasonal employees and this year not only are they battling against mother nature but a shorter time period between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“If you haven’t shipped your package now is a good time to do it, certainly UPS offers one and two-day service but our system is really taxed to the limits so if you have packages get them out now don’t delay any longer,” said Jim Eben UPS Package Division Manager.
The U.S. Postal Service is also working against the clock, they brought in more staff for Monday and there was a constant flow at the office off Michigan Ave. in Grand Rapids.
On average they get about 800,00 letters and packages through their doors, but Monday Supervisor Steve Austin says they expect more than 2 million pieces through that office alone.
For you last-minute shoppers, UPS and the Post Office will ship through December 23rd but of course it will cost you more.
The deadline for the post office for first class mail is Friday and December 21st for priority mail.
