Quiet Friday, but Snow Forecast Increased for Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A much-deserved break in the lake-effect snow will last throughout the daytime Friday, but a storm system passing to the southeast of West Michigan will bring widespread accumulating snow starting Friday night and continuing throughout the day Saturday.

A weak cold front will still generate a few flurries or light snow showers during the day Friday, especially north of I-96.  But temperatures in the mid 20s and lighter winds will allow road crews a chance to improve driving conditions around the region.

However, that front will provide an initial boost to snow showers that will develop as moisture arrives from the southwest Friday evening.  A prolonged period of light to moderate snow will then follow overnight and continue through most of Saturday.  Additionally, snow will hang on into even the late stages of Saturday now as a piece of energy rotates around the back side of the storm system as it exits the region.

As a result of the extended period of snowfall, we’ve been forced to increase the snowfall forecast for West Michigan through the weekend.  Just about all of the FOX 17 viewing area will receive two to four inches of snow through Saturday night; locations south and east of Grand Rapids will be more likely to see some higher totals in the three- to six-inch range.

Some additional accumulation is likely as lake-effect snow returns Sunday.  You can find the full 7 Day Forecast on the Weather page, and watch later editions of FOX 17 News for more on the winter weather.
