KENT COUNTY, Mich – District 4 Commissioner Gary Rolls has announced he is resigning his position, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Rolls is facing trial for first-degree criminal sexual conduct, evidence tampering and using a computer to commit a crime.

He has served as a commissioner since January 2003.

During this morning’s meeting, Dan Koorndyk, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, announced the resignation by reading a statement written by Rolls.

“I have resigned from the Board of Commissioners,” Rolls wrote. “I thank the citizens of Kent County and my constituents of the current and former 4th District for allowing me to serve you. I will use this time to prepare for trial to prove my absolute and complete innocence.”

The Board of Commissioners will have 30 days from the effective date of Rolls’ resignation to select an individual to replace him through the rest of his term.

“We appreciate that he recognizes it is better for the Board of Commissioners to select a new member who can represent District 4 without distraction,” said Koorndyk.

The person selected to replace Rolls will hold the seat through December 2014.

Anyone interested in the appointment to the 4th District should send a letter and resume to the Board of Commissioners Office.
