Steve Yzerman to Play in Winter Festival Alumni Showdown

Posted

DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings have announced that Steve Yzerman will play in the upcoming Alumni Showdown at Comerica Park on New Year’s Eve Day.

The longest-serving captain in NHL history, Yzerman wasn’t able to commit to playing in the Alumni Showdown until this week thanks to his responsibilities with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and the Canadian Olympic Men’s Hockey program.

There have been so many former Red Wings and Maple Leafs players that are interested in playing in the alumni game that the event organizers have set up two different games that will serve as a double-header of sorts on December 31, 2013 in downtown Detroit. The following day, the current Red Wings and Maple Leafs will play at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor in the sixth annual NHL Winter Classic. It is expected to be the largest attended NHL game ever.
