MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police and prosecutors believe that the shooting that killed Charles “CJ” White Jr. was accidental.

The shooting may have been caused by “horseplay” with a handgun between the two friends, according to Muskegon Heights Police.

Seventeen-year-old Vance Thompson is facing charges related to the fatal shooting of White, the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

Thompson was charged with involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence and felony firearm possession related to the shooting.

If he is charged on all counts, he could be spending up to 27 years behind bars.

White died in the hospital at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was shot in the head at around 8 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Hume and Leahy Streets in Muskegon Heights.
