GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two suspects went before a judge Thursday after investigators believe they attempted to rob a man and instead killed him.

John Dahlinger was found dead inside of his home on October 16, 2013. He died of a gunshot wound to the heat.

Thirty-six-year-old Danyell Thomas is being charged with the murder. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Dijana Kilic, is being charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

According to court documents, investigators found phone records showing Kilic was in contact with Dahlinger on the day he died, and police believe the two were at the home when Dahlinger was killed.

Police also found a bag inside a field in Allegan County that contained the suspect’s phone along with ammunition that matched the murder scene.

Thomas’ father told FOX 17 that his son has been in custody since Oct. 26 after a drug violation and that the two suspects have been dating each other.  He also said that he and his wife are taking care of Thomas’ 14-month-old daughter.
