MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. — Fire crews from Caledonia, Wayland, Freeport and Thornapple Township are on the scene of a fire in Middleville.

Smoke and flames were pouring out of the upper level of the home in the 200 block of Main Street at around 12:30 pm.

Earlier firefighters were going inside to rescue two cats that remained in the apartment.

A renter who lives in the two story home said the fire may have broken out in the basement.

She was at work when she got a call that the house was on fire.

She said nobody was hurt and she’s thankful her children were at school when the fire started.

It’s too early to determine what may have caused the fire.

The Public Information Officer with the Freeport Fire Department said that Thornapple Township is the lead agency in the fire.

The Barry County Red Cross set up tables near the fire scene to help to assist and provide food to firefighters as well as displaced residents.
