GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two people are dead and one was pinned in a vehicle in a crash on westbound I-196 west of Lake Michigan Drive.

The expressway was closed until around 4:30 a.m. The Grand Rapids Police Department assisted the Michigan State Police at the scene. The call came in around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

MSP says the crash involved at least two vehicles, and speed and darkness are considered factors. One witness saw one vehicle pass at high speed and crash. The witness pulled over on the right to assist. Another driver pulled into the left lane to give the witness room but crashed into the first car, which had come to rest in the left lane.

Two occupants of the first car died, another was taken to the hospital. The driver of the second crash vehicle was treated at the scene and released.

A police dog was used to track the final occupant of the speeding vehicle who ran off. The dog lost the track.

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Trooper Pipe at the Michigan State Police Rockford Post at 616-866-4411.
