BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The man driving a minivan that crashed into that back of a semi on US 131 and sent him and four others to the hospital Monday is a physics students at Western Michigan University.
Khalil Hamam received his PhD from the Kalamazoo-based university this summer.
Both he and the other person in the front seat of the van were sent to the hospital with critical injuries after he rear-ended the merging semi on northbound 131 near 100th Street.
His condition was upgraded to fair Tuesday. There were six children in the van with Hamam and the other passenger: 1-year-old Tariq, 2-year-old Eleen, 4-year-old Hashem, 5-year-old Hisham, 7-year-old Leen and 8-year-old Amr. Three of them were hospitalized. Three of them were injured in the accident as well as a passenger in the front seat.
