ALLEGAN, Mich.– Friends, family and members of the military will say good-bye to a local soldier who died during a Fourth of July boating accident.
Sargent Christopher Schenk, 29, served more than 11 years in the Army National Guard, which included two tours overseas. Sgt. Schenk died one month after he dove into shallow water at Torch Lake and injured his neck.
Friends say the time before the accident was the most exciting of his life because he and his girlfriend were expecting a baby boy.
Sgt. Schenk’s funeral is today at noon, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 61 N. 23rd St., Battle Creek MI, 49015 http://www.stjosephbc.org/
His burial follows at 2:00 p.m. with full military honors. It will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, MI 49012
