OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich.,– A ten-year old girl is ‘Paying it Forward’ after her hog sold for six thousand dollars at the Ottawa County Youth Fair.
It was Mattea Antrup’s second year participating in the 4-H program at the fair and she had big plans this year.
Mattea named her hog ‘Helen DeVos’ after Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Back in February of 2012 she had hip surgery and had to spent seven weeks in a near full body cast.
“Well I wanted to do it because of the kids I saw in there. They were having some really rough lives so I wanted to help them out,” Mattea said.
She raised her hog and met with buyers all with the goal of donating any money she got back to the hospital. She never imagined though the hog would sell for around $6,500. The hog was bid on three times and she ended up getting $28.00 a pound for it.
Mattea says she wants to donate the money to grant a wish for some of the children in the hospital.
“I wanted them to have a little bit more of a better day then being all stressed and stuff,” she said.
The buyer is donating the pig to LOVE INC, a local organization that helps feed families in need.
If you would like to help with her cause, you can still donate through ‘Add A Bid’. Just contact the local Macatawa Bank in Holland before August 1, 2013 and give them Mattea’s name.
