GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a matter of hours the Grand Rapids chapter of the American Red Cross handed out 600 bottles of water. Volunteers drove up and down the streets looking for anyone who needed a drink on Thursday, July 18th.
Volunteers say they tried their best to keep the waters cold but the demand from the public kept the coolers empty.
Brandon Baird was one of the Red Cross volunteers handing out water and said, “It’s not a natural disaster but it’s a disaster to them. It’s heat and people don’t like the heat. We are from Michigan and we don’t get this kind of weather.”
The heat continued well after the sun went down. The city of Grand Rapids offered cooling centers for people who needed immediate relief from the heat. You can get information on where the centers are located by calling 211 any time, any day.
