GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell held a news conference Thursday to discuss the options available to citizens to avoid heat illness and dehydration this summer.
Heartwell said that Grand Rapids Police have responded to one heat-related emergency during the heat wave.
“I suggested that one of the things that we ought to strive to do under that emergency plan is to identify those who are the most vulnerable so we can proactively reach out to them,” he said.
Salvation Army locations are open to those needing to cool down during the summer heat. The American Red Cross also has a mobile cantina moving around the city offering hydration. They also have an app that shows signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
