MUSKEGON, Mich. – Wednesday morning, Muskegon police arrested a man in connection with a deadly shooting that happened around 6 p.m. July 9, though charges haven’t been filed yet.

The shooting happened on the 300 block of Monroe Avenue following an argument between two men.

“I was told [there were] 15 shots in a matter of 5 seconds. These are semi-automatic weapons,” Anthony Trainor, whose daugther Carmesha Rogers was shot, said.

Rogers was shot in the head during the altercation.

“[She was an] innocent bystander. She was coming downstairs to see what all the commotion was going on,” Trainor said.

Trainor said his daughter tried to get the kids out of harm’s way. That’s when she was struck by a stray bullet.

Police haven’t confirmed what led to the shootout, but witnesses say it was was over something petty.

“If you ask me, they’re cowards. Just to be firing, you got kids out here,” Trainor said.

Rogers was rushed to the hospital for surgery. She’s listed in critical condition.

“Even though she was shot in the head, she’s doing fine,” Leeandrea Trainor, Rogers’ mother said. “No brain swelling. All I can do now is pray and ask the community to pray with me for my daughter,” she added.

Rogers’ family believes the man that’s responsible for her injuries died in the shooting. Friends identify him as 27-year-old Alex Brown. It’s violence that pastor David Wimbley of Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church wants to see end.

“The church plays a big part in that. What can we do to make a difference? We’ve got to show people the love of Jesus Christ. It’s not a big deal for people no more, but when we was coming up, we didn’t hear of none of this,” he said.

The pastor added, “How do we bring back basic principles of love for our neighbors, love for God, love for my brother, love for my neighbor? It just makes our lives so much easier.”

Investigators said other people of interest have been identified in connection with the crime.

“I’m confident they’re going to get them. The same names keep popping up. The police is gonna get them. It’s just a matter of time,” LeeandreaTrainor said.
