GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Mich- An 18-year-old woman from Chicago died yesterday after being hit by a car on 68th street south of County Road 388 in Van Buren County. 18-year-old Charles Carrigan from Kalamazoo was travelling south on 68th street trying to find M-43 by using his GPS when he swerved to miss a pedestian walking on the edge of the road with the victim. As Mr. Carrigan swerved, his vehicle struck Ayala Shulman who was walking in the middle of the road.
Ms. Shulman was taken to South Haven Community Hospital then to Bronson Methodist Hospital via AirCare, where she later died. At time of the crash there was patchy fog, there were no street lights and Ms. Shulman was wearing black clothing .
Speed nor alcohol are factors in this crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
