DOWAGIAC, Mich. – All the Dowagiac Union Schools in Cass County are on lockdown and will be closed Monday.
According to WNDU, a school custodian noticed a 14-year-old person outside the Dowagiac Middle school with a gun around 6:40 a.m.
The principal arrived and tried to make contact with the person, but they took off into the woods east of the building.
Police officers then set up a perimeter to try and find that person. Officers later heard a single gunshot and found the person with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The person was taken to the hospital and their condition is unknown.
Police and school officials believe it to be an isolated incident but are continuing to investigate.
