GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Camping spots across Michigan are quickly getting booked as Memorial Day weekend approaches.
162 of Grand Haven State Park’s 172 spaces have been booked, with calls for reservations coming as early as last July.
A few RVs were already parked at their site on Thursday afternoon.
The Department of Natural Resources says 77% of the state’s camp sites have been claimed for the holiday weekend.
They’ll be just a few of the visitors coming to Michigan for the summer tourist season. Pure Michigan has launched a $4.8 million advertising campaign for the summer, including national cable TV ads. Crews are filming a commercial in Grand Rapids this week.
The Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce is expected one of their best seasons ever.
“The downtown merchants are fuller than ever – no open spaces,” Kim Talaga says. “The past couple years, everything’s been increasing, so people are really looking for a better summer than even last year.”
