BROOMFIELD TWP, Mich — A 37-year-old man from Big Rapids died Tuesday night after he was hit by a pick-up truck. Jaremy Stiles had pulled over and gotten out of his car to see if another driver needed help when he was hit.
Around 10:10 p.m. Stiles pulled up to a car that was at the side of the road with its hazard lights on on M-20 west of Sherman Road. That’s located in Isabella county. The car was pulled over to call 911 about a dead deer lying in the road. Stiles got out of his car and walked to the other car to see if any help was required. When he found out about the deer he started walking back to his car.
At that time, a Ford F-250 pickup was approaching, and the 51-year-old driver from Alanson saw the dead deer but not Stiles walking. Stiles apparently feared he would be hit if he stayed where he was, so he ran toward the ditch. That ended up being in the path of the pickup, and Stiles was pronounced dead on the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
