KENT COUNTY, Mich. — An Aeromed helicopter transported a teenager to the hospital after a collision with a fully loaded dump truck in northern Kent County on Thursday afternoon.

At 2:39 p.m. Thursday, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a crash involving a Kent County Road Commission dump truck and another vehicle on Pine Island near 14 Mile Road NE in Algoma Township. The impact caused the dump truck to strike a bedroom of a home on Pine Island Drive.

An Aeromed helicopter transported 18-year-old Lee Brandt Tompkins of Cedar Springs from the vehicle to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition later on with head, arm and internal injuries.

The truck driver — Steve Mark Blossom, 60, of Grant — sustained minor injuries.

The intersection is a two-way stop with stop signs for drivers on 14 Mile Road. Witnesses told deputies that the teen was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on 14 Mile and ran the stop sign. The dump truck then crashed into the passenger side of the teenager’s car before continuing on and hitting the house.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts and deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
