DETROIT — Red Wings forward and Muskegon native Justin Abdelkader was suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on Toni Lydman in the second period of Saturday’s game. The Anaheim Ducks won the game 4-0 to take a 2-1 series lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal.

Abdelkader had a phone hearing with NHL’s Director of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan. The physical forward will miss Games 4 and 5 of the series. Game 4 is Monday night in Detroit.

Abdelkader was assessed a five-minute major charging penalty and a game misconduct for his hit on Lydman in the second period of Game 3.
