MARNE, Mich. – Local music instructor, Jeff Looman, has died after he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says Looman was riding on the Musketawa Trail on Sunday afternoon, when he apparently rode out in front of a vehicle.  Deputies say the victim was wearing a helmet, but suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Looman was a music instructor at Calvin Christian and Grandville Christian Schools.  According to one of his faculty pages, the 55-year-old enjoyed several hobbies outside of biking, including carpentry, camping, and playing trombone.

Both Calvin Christian and Grandville Christian Schools released statements through their Facebook pages on Sunday, in response to news of Looman’s death.

Calvin Christian Schools: It is with deep sorrow that we tell you that this afternoon our beloved music teacher, Mr. Jeff Looman, was tragically killed in a car-bike accident. Please keep his wife and family in your prayers as well as our Calvin Christian community as we mourn the loss of this excellent Christian teacher and friend. We rest in the firm knowledge that he now enjoys the music of heaven.

Grandville Christian Schools:  At approximately 3:30 pm this afternoon, Jeff Looman (GCS band teacher) was struck by a car while riding his bicycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  Our sympathies are extended to his wife Linda and their children. May God’s peace comfort them in this time of deep sorrow. We will share arrangements as they develop.  We encounter adversity as we live in a fallen world. …We continue to face situations beyond our ability to understand. When we cannot understand, we go to God and he promises to give us his peace.  Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty.  I will say to The Lord, “You are my place of safety and protection. You are my God and I trust you.” Psalm 91:1-2  Tim Steenstra
