GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — (FOX 17)

The Grand River continues to rise above record levels and the city of Grand Rapids has an opportunity to pay it forward to help the flood effort. Around one hundred city workers and volunteers have been furiously filling sand bags and need more help.

With the river forecasted to crest Monday afternoon the city needs around fifty thousand sand bags to be placed around the cities flood walls and downtown museums.

Project Engineer Carrie Rivette says: “We are just trying to find worst case scenario, if the estimates they are giving us are over 24 feet but that could be plus or minus a foot and a half. If we get that extra foot and a half, we need to be ready. So we need to do everything that we can do in advance.”

Volunteers are still needed, if you are interested in helping out you can show up to 660 Market Avenue in Grand Rapids after 8am. If you cannot volunteer your time, shovels and scoops are needed. Rivette says with over one hundred volunteers helping out refreshments and snacks are always welcome too.
