WARREN, Mich-  A hockey player who broke her back during a freak accident at practice is being recognized by Red Wings Captain Henrik Zetterberg.

Mary Mrdjenovic is currently a senior at Regina High School and carries a 4.0 grade point average. She was also hockey player, until slamming into the boards last month, breaking her back. “Three vertebrae were broken, but one was bad enough to where it was not supporting my spine,” says Mrdjenovic.

Now, before any of this happened, Mary applied for the “Henrik Zetterberg Scholarship Award” which is given out the top female hockey player in the state each year. She didn’t get it, but once the Red Wing heard about what happened, he awarded her anyway and gave her a scholarship for perseverance.

Mary is expected to make a full recovery, but won’t be able to play contact sports anymore.

Tonight her family is working with the Red Wings to attend an upcoming game, so she can meet her favorite player in person.
