GRANDVILLE, Mich — Grandville’s longest-serving mayor announced this week he will not run for re-election when his term expires.
James R. Buck’s 29-year tenure will end on Nov. 11. He made the announcement at the end of Monday night’s city council meeting. Buck was elected to the city council back in 1971, and then was elected mayor in 1984. That means he’s been re-elected seven times.
At Monday night’s meeting, Buck said, “I look back over the past 42 years with a lot of positive thoughts and a feeling of some major accomplishments.”
Some things that happened during Buck’s tenure include the development of Rivertown Crossings Mall, significant population growth and now the coming of Cabela’s. Buck has also served on a variety of committees including the Michigan Municipal League Foundation, and he was an assistant tennis coach at Grandville High School.
