CONWAY, S.C. — Now this is just madness. The Liberty Flames will be just the second 20-loss team to play in the upcoming NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament after winning the Big South conference tournament.

Liberty beat Charleston Southern 87-76 for just its 15th win of the season and earned the Big South’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament which starts in less than two weeks. The win extends the Flames longest winning streak of the season to five games.

The Flames’ .429 winning percentage (15-20) is the lowest for an NCAA tournament team since Oakland (Michigan) had a 12-18 record (.400) in 2005. Liberty joins Coppin State (2008) as the only teams to make the NCAA’s marquee postseason tournament with 20 or more losses.
