Former Grand Haven Trooper Becomes MSP Deputy Director

LANSING, Mich — The new lieutenant colonel and commander of the Michigan State Police’s Field Services Bureau has ties to West Michigan.

Captain Thomas Sands was promoted to the position on Feb. 3, and MSP made the announcement on Feb. 19. Sands is now one of four deputy directors.

He is an Ann Arbor native who graduated from Central Michigan University. Sands has served as a trooper at the Grand Haven Post, detective trooper at the Criminal Investigation Division in northern Michigan and a detective sergeant in the Technical services Unit.

Sands now helps lead more than 1,400 employees. He is married with three children.
