Van Buren County Neighbor Assaulted With Hatchet

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A Van Buren County man has been jailed for assaulting his neighbor with a hatchet Friday night.

At 11:06 p.m. Friday, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man that had been assaulted by his neighbor at the neighbor’s home in the 26000 block of County Road 388 in the Kendall area in Pine Grove Township. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found a 44-year-old man suffering from a large laceration on the top of his head. He was transported to Allegan General Hospital for treatment of non-life-thteatening injuries.

Van Buren County dispatchers obtained a phone number for the suspect — a 51-year-old man who was believed to still be in his home.  Dispatchers contacted the suspect by phone and had him come out of his residence to meet with police. He was subsequently arrested.

The investigation found that the suspect and victim were consuming alcohol together when a heated argument ensued.  The argument became physical and when the victim tried to leave the suspect picked up a hatchet and struck the victim with the blunt back part of the hatchet.

The victim was able to make it home and called police.

The suspect was transported to the Van Buren County Jail on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon/felonious assault. 

The incident remains under investigation by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
