GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Wednesday night will serve as a homecoming for West Michigan native Mike Knuble.

The East Kentwood alum will make his Grand Rapids Griffins debut at Van Andel Arena Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Barons. He will wear number 25.

The 40-year-old forward, who has more than 1,000 NHL games played on his resume, officially signed a 25-game professional tryout with the Griffins on Monday and joined the team for an afternoon practice.

Knuble admits that if an AHL team were so close to his hometown he probably wouldn’t be playing in the AHL. He still hopes to sign with an NHL team at some point this season, but feels it’s necessary for him to continue playing somewhere to have a shot at hockey’s top professional league.
