KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Sewage has overflowed in Kalamazoo by the gallon.

On Friday, Jan. 4, the City of Kalamazoo Department of Public Services personnel were notified that at least 300,000 gallons from a sanitary manhole has overflowed into the wetlands north of Nazareth Complex and Nazareth Road

The impact and cause of the overflow is unknown at this time.

This is the second time this location has had an overflow of sewage. The first time was in the spring of 2011, when 600,000 gallons of sewage leaked out as a result of the spot being vandalized. Officials said that it’s coincidental that this happened twice and that this incident was not the result of a human act.

Officials are asking that people stay away from the affected areas until the area has been assessed.
