GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A 27-year-old man shot and killed two women, then took his own life in a counseling center parking lot Monday morning, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD).
GRPD Chief Kevin Belk says the man and one of the women had just finished a counseling session at Arbor Circle, located on Ball Street on the northeast side of Grand Rapids.
The three people were in a van in the parking lot when the man allegedly shot two women, ages 21 and 31, before turning the gun on himself.
Police responded just after 11:00 a.m.
The women were dead at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The names of the victims were not released, pending notification of their families.
Monday’s shooting makes it five gun-related deaths in Grand Rapids in the past four days.
Belk knows there’s a growing gun problem in his city.
“Obviously, there are too many guns in society that are out there,” he says. “We’re dealing with them regularly. The majority of the time we’re dealing with illegal guns – guns that are possessed by people that shouldn’t have them, registered to them, people that have felony records.”
