KENTWOOD, Mich.

Dozens of young soccer players participated in a 21-hour soccer-a-thon on Saturday at MVP Sports.  The players are part of the Grand Rapids Crew Juniors Club in West Michigan.

The soccer event is raising money for a scholarship fund in the name of Christian Ouding, a 13-year-old star crew member who drowned in Lake Michigan.

“It was a  massive blow to the team the community and we are just trying to do what’s right now to continue to try and find ways to keep his memory alive and help people grieve this year,” explained Chip Hoebeke, President of Grand Rapids Crew Juniors Club.

The kids donated bags of coins to help out the cause.

” They don’ t always understand what’s going on,  but they are very much caught up in spirit of it,” he said.

Players  ages 8 to 18 participated in the late night games. Organizers kept it interesting with a “glow in the dark” neon theme using  glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces.
