GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — US-131 northbound and southbound was closed between Ann Street and Franklin Street between for several hours Tuesday morning
Originally, the freeway was set to be closed at 8 a.m., but delays in coordinating the closure kept the freeway open until just before 9 a.m. Grand Rapids Police sent out word that 131 may be closed for several hours.
The freeway was reopened around 10:45 a.m.
The closure is needed because a power pole holding up power cables over the freeway snapped off early Tuesday, and restoring the pole and power line requires the freeway closure. At one time, the pole was on fire, but the flames didn't last long.
The closure will be on southbound US-131 at Ann Street and on northbound US-131 at Franklin Street.
Various ramps feeding US-131 will be closed, plus, the ramps to northbound 131 will be closed from eastbound and westbound I-196.
The problem with the pole was noted before 4 a.m. at the corner of 6th Street and Scribner Avenue on the near North Side of Grand Rapids.
